Article summary

RetailVista can handle barcodes that are printed by a scale. In this type of barcode, there is always an productnumber and a price.
Because a regular productnumber is often too long and cannot be changed, RetailVista uses a PLU number as the productnumber in this case.
A freely assignable PLU number can be linked to each product in RetailVista. PLU numbers are generally short numbers with usually 4 positions.

The type of barcode must be based on a valid (!) Ean13 barcode. This means that the check digit (the 13th digit) must be correct.
For RetailVista, it is also important that the productnumber and the price can be found in a fixed position so it can be extracted properly.

An example of a barcode printed by a scale can be:
1202455001659

This example barcode consists of 4 parts:
120 2455 001659

120With this part, RetailVista can recognize that it is a scale barcode (prefix number)
2455This is the productnumber of the scale, in RetailVista it is the PLU number
00165This is the price of the product
9Check digit of a Ean13 barcode

In RetailVista, a new type of barcode can be added under 'Barcode types'.
The screenshot below shows how the setup works. RetailVista is very flexible in terms of the structure of a price barcode.
It is possible to customize the leading number, the PLU code, and the price.

The example barcode mentioned above is set up as follows:
- Recognition prefix of 120;
- PLU code starting at position 4 and being 4 characters long
- The price starting at position 8 and being 5 characters long
- Finally, the check digit which isn't used.

The example contains productnumer 2455 which is configured as PLU in the following product.
Please note the product does not have to contain any barcodes, in fact adding barcodes is not recommended because that will interfere with the scale barcode type.

After creating or modifying the barcode type, the cash register synchronization must take place, and the printed barcode will be recognized immediately.

We strongly advise testing whether the sticker printed by a scale with barcode printer can be scanned correctly in RetailVista POS before making any purchase or setup.
